Salvaging them returns more materials than they cost to make.
To maximise crafting Mastery Level as efficiently as possible, craft uncommon (green) lvl 14 armor items. With that you’ll be able to hit the random starting locations after minimal event time expenditure. 
So you can just in your ANB, load the level 20 times, cast a portal still while the black screen is fading into the level, and exit immediately, taking only a second or less on each run.
Pro tip: However, you don’t actually need to have finished the level 20 times to trigger this. With those, regularly you even spawn right on the chest. In ANBs, as continuation of the tip above: if you want to farm in The Severed Mountain (SM) faster, you need to have started the level 20 times to activate the “random spawning” locations. That way you can exit the level through the portal without the 30 second penalty. In ANBs, open a portal in the beginning of a level before you aggro any mobs.
